Kampor and the Lopar peninsula
The Kvarner Gulf
Six kilometres northwest of Rab — and connected to it by seven buses daily — KAMPOR is a small, scattered village with a deep swath of shallow sandy beach. It doesn't get too crowded even in high season , and there area couple of small campsites behind the beach, as well as private rooms available through agencies in Rab Town or by asking around. About 1km inland from Kampor, back along the road to Rab, lies the Graveyard of the Victims of Fascism (Groblje žrtava fasizma), a site commemorating the concentration camp established here by the Italian occupiers in 1942. It's referred to locally as the "Slovene Cemetery" owing to the large numbers of Slovenes who were imprisoned and died here, although it housed a wide range of Partisans, Jews and political undesirables, rounded up in the Italian-controlled portions of Slovenia and Croatia. Most of the internees were crowded together in flimsy tents — some five thousand died in the winter of 1942-43 alone, starved of food and drink by Italian officials. After the collapse of Italy in September 1943, most of the able-bodied survivors joined Tito's Partisans, who were briefly in control of the island before the arrival of a German garrison. The site is a dignified and restful place, with long lines of graves — one for every four people who died — surrounded by well-tended lawns, trees and shrubs.
