Hvar - The Town and around
Dalmatia

At the centre of the town is Trg svetog Stjepana, a long, rectangular main square which meets the sea at the so-called Mandrač the balustraded inner harbour used for mooring small boats. Dominating the square's southwestern corner is the arcaded bulk of the seventeenth-century Venetian arsenal, with an arched ground floor into which war galleys were once hauled for repairs.

The upper storey of the arsenal was adapted in 1612 to house the town theatre (kazaliste; daily: summer 9am–fpm & 5-11pm; winter I lam–noon), the oldest in Croatia and one of the first in Europe. It was built to assuage the distrust between nobles and commoners wbich had continued since the Ivanić rebellion, since the theatre was a civic amenity which all classes could enjoy together. The gaily painted interior, complete with two tiers of boxes, dates from the early 1800s, when locals revived and renovated the theatre after a period of neglect. The auditorium is entered through a small picture gallery (same times), which has a modest collection of twentieth-century Croatian work.
