The upper storey of the arsenal was adapted in 1612 to house the town theatre (kazaliste; daily: summer 9am–fpm & 5-11pm; winter I lam–noon), the oldest in Croatia and one of the first in Europe. It was built to assuage the distrust between nobles and commoners wbich had continued since the Ivanić rebellion, since the theatre was a civic amenity which all classes could enjoy together. The gaily painted interior, complete with two tiers of boxes, dates from the early 1800s, when locals revived and renovated the theatre after a period of neglect. The auditorium is entered through a small picture gallery (same times), which has a modest collection of twentieth-century Croatian work. |
